The Private History of a Campaign that Failed is one of Mark Twain's sketches (1885), a short, highly fictionalized memoir of his two-week stint in the pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard. It takes place in Marion County, Missouri, and is about a group of inexperienced militiamen, the Marion Rangers, who end up killing a stranger in panic. (In 1887 he claimed before Union veterans that he had been in one battle in which a stranger had been killed in the summer of 1861[1] In fact Twain saw no action; he quipped that during his service he spent more time retreating while being hunted then fighting)[2][3]
소설가. 마크 트웨인('물 깊이 두 길'이란 뜻)은 필명, 본명은 사무엘 랭그혼 클레멘스(Samuel Langhorne Clemens). 샌프란시스코에서 신문 기자로 이름이 알려져, 유머러스한 단편 〈캘리베러스의 명물 도약 개구리〉(1865)로 호평을 얻었다. 1867년 관광단과 동행해 유럽 · 팔레스타인 등지로 여행을 떠나, 그 기행문 〈철부지의 해외여행기〉(1869)로 대성공을 거두었다.
그의 천재성은 미시시피 강을 배경으로 한 일련의 자전적 소년소설에 가장 잘 발휘되어 있다. 〈톰 소여의 모험〉(1876), 〈허클베리 핀의 모험〉(1884), 〈미시시피 강의 생활〉(1883) 등이다. 소설 〈왕자와 거지〉(1882), 날카로운 사회 풍자를 보여준 〈아서 왕궁의 코네티컷 양키〉(1889), 〈잔 다르크에 대한 개인적인 회고〉(1895) 등을 썼다.
